On Wednesday night, Grayson County High School Principal Todd Johnston said that Athletic Director Josh Basham has been named the new GCHS Lady Cougars head basketball coach.

The move comes on the heels of Johnston naming Travis Johnston the new boys basketball coach on Tuesday.

Basham replaces Travis Johnston, who was named to replace Daniel Pharris in May, but with the sudden departure of head boys basketball coach Kelly Carwile early last week, Travis Johnston was tabbed to lead the GCHS Cougars boys program.

Basham, who graduated from GCHS in 2002, and played on the Cougars round ball team that advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2001. He started on the team in 2002, and assisted former Cougars head coach Todd Johnston for four years at GCHS, while also serving as the freshman team’s head coach.

“Basketball has been a big part of my family,” Basham said, “and I really love the game. I always wanted an opportunity to be a head coach. I’m excited and ready to get going.”

Todd Johnston said Basham will remain the school’s Athletic Director, but a (part-time) assistant AD will be hired to aid Basham, particularly during basketball season.

Basham said current Lady Cougars assistant coach Daryl Meredith will remain on staff as an assistant, and will be joined on the Lady Cougars sidelines by Becca Meredith (who’s also the GCHS volleyball coach) and Hannah Anderson, a physical education teacher at Wilkey Elementary.
