A Louisville priest convicted of sex abuse dating back to the 1970s was denied shock probation by Circuit Court Judge Bruce Butler.

Butler rejected the request made by Father Joseph Hemmerle, after the disgraced priest’s attorney filed the motion two weeks ago.

Hemmerly was camp director at Camp Tall Trees in Meade County for 30 years. In November, Hemmerle was convicted of inappropriate touching, an offense committed during his time at Camp Tall Trees. He was acquitted of engaging in an unwanted sexual act

He is scheduled to stand trial in a similar case next year.

In February, he was sentenced to seven years in prison after the court found him guilty of molesting Michael Norris, a former camper. The incident is believed to have happened more than 40 years ago while Norris was attending the summer camp.
