Sunday night at approximately 11:15, the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the intersection of Shrewsbury and Saddler Roads on the report of a possible alcohol-related accident.

Upon Deputies Rance Whobrey and Mark Newman arriving on the scene, they found a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck in a ditch.

The driver, 59-year-old David Luurtssema, of Caneyville, admitted to deputies that he had been drinking. He was given a field sobriety test, which he failed. He also displayed slurred speech and was unsteady on his feet.

He was arrested and transported to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center and then to the Grayson County Detention Center.

Based on marks at the scene, Luurtssema was traveling west on Sadler Road, and as he approached Shrewesbury Road the Dodge left the roadway and traveled into a three- to four-foot ditch. He continued driving in the ditch for about 150 feet. In an effort to get out of the ditch, Luurtssema put the truck in reverse and traveled backward to the spot where he entered the trench.

Someone stopped and tried to pull the Dodge out of the muddy channel, but the Good Samaritan had to stop because his truck was being pulled into the ditch.

The wreck damaged the Dodge’s radiator and also inflicted property damage.
