According to the arrest report, School Resource Officer Ian Renfrow received a report “concerning a sexual encounter between (John Cariel) and a juvenile under the age of 14. Through investigation it was found that (Cariel) was employed at Grayson County Middle School as a sixth grade teacher and the victim was known to be a student at the same school at the time of the offense. It was found that (Cariel) made initial contact with the victim via social media like application using his cellular device.”
The report continues, “It was found that the offender sent photographs of his exposed genitalia to the juvenile victim via this application. It was further found that a physical sexual act was performed in the parking lot of Major’s Trucking in Caneyville … around October of 2017. The offender exposed his genitalia to the victim, then allowed the juvenile victim to perform oral sex on him. After oral sex was performed, the juvenile was exposed to the offender as the offender knowingly masturbated in the presence of the juvenile victim.”
The 65-year-old Cariel, after being read and waiving his Miranda right, “admitted to each of the above allegations,” according to Officer Renfrow’s report. Cariel was arrested at 9:21 Tuesday morning and transported to the Grayson County Detention Center where he remains.
The first-degree sexual abuse and prohibited use of an electronic communication system to procure a minor for a sex act are class D felonies, punishable by one to five years in prison on each charge. Second-degree sodomy is a class C felony, punishable by five to 10 years in prison, and distributing obscene material to a minor is a class A misdemeanor.
Cariel’s arrest marks the third Grayson County Schools teacher to be arrested on child-sex related charges since early March, and the fourth Grayson County Schools teacher arrested since late November 2016:
- On May 9, long-time Grayson County High School teacher Roger Williams, 62, of Clarkson, was arrested on two counts of first-degree sexual abuse and possessing/viewing matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor.
- On March 12, GCHS teacher Jonathan Jones was charged with third-degree sodomy
- In late November 2016, GCHS teacher and head baseball coach Gavin Logsdon was arrested and charged with third-degree rape (otherwise known at statutory rape).
Logsdon, Williams and Jones are free on bond.
