U.S. Sen. Rand Paul filed a lawsuit against his Bowling Green neighbor who recently admitted to assaulting him in front of his house in November.
The civil complaint, filed in Warren Circuit Court on Monday, says the GOP senator seeks an unspecified amount of compensatory and punitive damages from Rene Boucher for “physical pain and mental suffering” resulting from Boucher’s tackling of Sen. Paul as he was mowing his yard. Sen. Paul suffered rib fractures and recurrent pneumonia as a result of the incident.
Boucher, a retired anesthesiologist and pain specialist, was arrested on November 3 by Kentucky State Police and was originally charged with fourth-degree assault, a misdemeanor, before being charged in federal court with assaulting a member of Congress.
Boucher pled guilty to the felony offense and was sentenced earlier this month to 30 days in jail and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine. He has paid the $10,000 fine but has not received a date to report for his 30-day sentence.
Boucher has maintained the assault was motivated by Sen. Paul repeatedly placing yard debris in an area near the two men’s property line.
Sen. Paul is also requesting a judge impose an injunction against Boucher that would ban him from having any contact with Sen. Paul or his family. Without an injunction, Sen. Paul believes that Boucher “will continue in the future the pattern of stalking and harassment” of the senator and his family, according to the lawsuit.
The two men have been neighbors in a gated community for over 17 years.
