The Food and Drug Administration says 163 people have fallen ill from a parasitic illness linked to salads purchased at McDonald’s. The fast food company has pulled salad offerings from 3,000 restaurants.
The FDA said illnesses have been reported in 14 states, including Kentucky; Ohio is the only state bordering Kentucky included in the outbreak of Cyclospora parasite; the parasite can be caused by fecal-matter in food.
The FDA has not identified which of the ingredients used in the salads is the vehicle for the outbreak. The investigation is ongoing and officials are reviewing supplier and distribution information.
Three people have been hospitalized, with no deaths reported, according to the FDA.
As of last week, the state hardest hit by the outbreak is Illinois with 29 people infected.
