Kentucky State Police say Somerset Mayor Eddie Girdler left the scene of an accident involving a 15-year-old girl riding a bicycle.
Girdler was driving on South Maple Street on Sunday afternoon when his vehicle collided with the juvenile’s bike, according to media reports. Police quickly identified Girdler as the driver. He was cited for leaving the scene of an accident and failure to render aid or assistance.
Girdler released a statement on Facebook saying he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, adding “you will soon have the facts.”
The victim was airlifted to a Lexington hospital where she is being treated for a lacerated liver.
Girdler’s full Facebook statement:
I was issued a citation for alleged traffic violation Sunday afternoon involving a person riding a bicycle at an intersection downtown. The citation was for leaving the scene of an accident but I was not aware of any accident since the area was clear. The report indicated that no alcohol or drugs were indicated. I requested and insisted upon a blood test in addition to the officers (sic) report so that it was clear that no alcohol or drugs were indicated. I hope you will help by not spredding (sic) false news about this. I was not arrested only cited for an alleged traffic violation. You will soon have the facts. My prayers and thoughts are with the person for a speedy recovery.
