On Wednesday, the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office was notified by school district officials about a father/son dispute that ended with the son being shot.
After an investigation, the sheriff’s office said that 41-year-old Chad Cox, of Cumberland, got into an argument with his 17-year- old son over the teen’s school attendance, according to police. During the argument, Cox armed himself with a .22 rifle and threatened his son in the presence of a witness. At some point during the dispute, the rifle discharged, with the son being struck in the left leg.
He was transported to a local hospital.
Cox was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment and second-degree terroristic threatening. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $20,000 bond.
