The Lady Aces of Frederick Fraize High School, in Cloverport, have only been playing volleyball for the past three seasons, and while they have shown remarkable improvement over that time, they provided little threat to Grayson County when the Lady Cougars visited on Wednesday. The Lady Cougar varsity won in straight sets, 25-11, 25-11, and the JV squad also won in straight sets, 21-14, 21-15.
VARSITY MATCH
Grayson County trailed just once in the first set, 0-1 on a hitting error on Cloverport’s first serve.
After building a four-point advantage, 8-4, the Lady Cougars saw the Lady Aces pull back to within a point at 8-7. Later, a five-point run put Grayson County on top by eight, 17-9. A seven point run sent the match to set-point at 24-10 before the Lady Aces won a rally point to stave it off. But Brieanna Boll put away a kill on the next serve to give the first set to the visitors.
Grayson County never trailed in the second set, though the score was tied several times in the early going. Leading 6-4, senior Olivia Lucas served five straight points, including two aces, to put the Lady Cougars comfortably in front, 11-4.
The improved Lady Aces pulled back to within three points at 11-8 but they would never be closer than four points the rest of the way. A kill by Maddie Duvall took the game to match-point at 24-11, then a Lady Aces hitting error gave Grayson the win. Grayson County is now 9-4 on the season.
JV MATCH
The Cloverport JV team seems to be where their future lies, as they gave a good accounting of themselves against Grayson County. Midway through the first set, the Lady Aces held a three-point edge, 12-9.
But with Katie Skaggs serving, the Lady Cougars came back to grab the lead, 13-12. They slowly expanded that lead to four points, 17-13, then a four-point run, including an ace by Chloe Cox at set-point gave them the first-set win.
After the Lady Cougars scored the first six points of the second set, the Lady Aces fought back, pulling to within two points of the lead at 11-9, but they would not get closer. Leading 19-15, Skaggs tipped a ball into an empty space to bring it to match-point, then put away a kill off the Cloverport block to give her team the match.
