In the six seasons that Breckinridge County has been playing girls’ soccer, the Lady Tigers had never beaten Grayson County. That streak ended Thursday evening at the Cougar Soccer Stadium as the Lady Tigers made a single goal stand up for a 1-0 win.

Breck senior Bailey Caster scored the only goal of the game in the 11th minute of the first half with a shot that banged off the right upright. When the ball continued on, it crossed the goal mouth and past the left upright, making it appear that there was no goal. But the official on the scene said the ball crossed the goal line before spinning out.

It was a frustrating night for the Lady Cougars as they had several excellent chances at Breck goalie Abby Shannon, including a pair of penalty kicks, but just could not get anything into the Lady Tiger net.

Just five minutes into the second half, the Lady Tigers were whistled for a foul inside the penalty area, giving Grayson County its first penalty-kick try. Senior Temple Strader stepped up to take the shot and had Shannon beat on her right, but the shot was just a touch too high and it hit the crossbar and bounded away.

Freshman Ellie Evans had a good chance in the 51st minute, bringing the ball in alone on Shannon, but her shot had no angle on it and Shannon was able to stop it.

In the 73rd minute junior Kandler Lindsey had a shot at the empty right side of the net but her hurried shot went wide.

Finally, with less than three minutes left in the game, a second penalty kick was awarded to the Lady Cougars. This time, Evans, one of the team’s leading scorers, took the shot. But as with her earlier shot, she sent the ball right at Shannon, who only had to drop to her knees to stop the shot.

The Lady Cougars will have to face the Lady Tigers at least one more time in the 11th District Tournament which will be held at the Cougar Soccer Stadium in October. The Lady Cougars are now 7-6 for the season and will play a pair of games on Saturday at Muhlenberg County against Logan County and the host Lady Mustangs.
