A drug investigation has been launched after a traffic stop on West Market Street, in Leitchfield.

Saturday night at approximately 8:30, Leitchfield Police Officer Eugene Cain executed a traffic stop in the 300 block of West Market Street on a westbound Chrysler Town and County minivan driving without its headlights on. Coincidently, following behind Cain was Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Fred Norder and his K-9 Marco.

As Cain was speaking with the male suspect, he informed him that Norder was going to deploy the drug dog around the vehicle. At that time, the suspect attempted to ingest a substance, which the suspect later said “might have been methamphetamine.”

The suspect, who for investigative reasons has not yet been identified by authorities, refused commands to spit the substance out and had to be physically removed from the vehicle.

Police were uncertain how much of the substance the suspect swallowed, resulting in Grayson County EMS being dispatched to the scene. The suspect was transported to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center where he was placed in ICU, according to police.

During the stop, Cain recognized the vehicle as having recently left a residence in the 300 block of South Broadway Street. Several Grayson County Sheriff’s Office deputies and city police were dispatched to the location where a cursory search of the residence was undertaken.

A member of the Greater Hardin County Narcotics Task Force also arrived on scene, and after officials consulted, it was decided to turn the investigation over to the task force.

The investigation is ongoing and K105 will have more information on this story as it becomes available.

Assisting Cain and Norder, either at the traffic stop or residence, were Leitchfield officers Joe Overton and Missy Skaggs, and GCSO deputies Kelsey Overton and Mark Johnson.
