A Breckinridge County man is in jail following a multi-county pursuit that began in Grayson County at approximately 5:30 Thursday evening.
Grayson County Sgt. Fred Norder executed a traffic stop on a reckless driver who was traveling westbound on the Western Kentucky Parkway in a 2019 Ford Passenger car (the car was a rental). The driver gave Norder a false name and when he discovered that, Norder found out the driver’s license was suspended.
Police said after learning of the license being suspended they contacted Ben Ward’s Towing Service to tow the car.
Upon the towing service arriving on scene, the driver, Alek A. Nelson, 24, of Irvington refused to exit the car and fled the scene nearly hitting two workers from the towing service.
Norder followed the car in pursuit and was later joined by Deputy Kelsey Overton near the Natcher Parkway.
A KSP trooper observed the fleeing vehicle traveling northbound on the William Natcher Parkway at 130 miles-per-hour and joined the pursuit. The chase also ran through Ohio, Daviess and Henderson Counties. During the pursuit, Nelson ran several vehicles off into the median, but no injuries were reported.
The chase continued onto the US 41 strip in Henderson County where officials say the suspect wrecked with another vehicle, but continued to flee from the scene. In a release, KSP says that the pursuing trooper performed a legal intervention with his vehicle causing Nelson’s vehicle to spin sideways off the roadway to a stop. As troopers approached the suspect, he refused to cooperate with their commands and resisted arrest. At that time, KSP used a taser to help contain him.
Nelson was transported to Methodist Hospital via ambulance due to possible seizures. He was later sent to Owensboro Health where he is still in the hospital under guard and will be taken to the Daviess County Detention Center after being discharged from the hospital.
Nelson is charged with: Trafficking in Controlled Substance (Over 8 ounces of Crystal Methamphetamine), disregarding a traffic control device, leaving the scene of an accident, driving on a suspended or revoked license, reckless driving, First-Degree fleeing or evading (motor vehicle), speeding, First-Degree criminal mischief and resisting arrest.
KSP says that additional charges are likely as Grayson and Daviess County authorities are pursuing warrants for charges they may have.
The Grayson County Sheriff’s Department; Kentucky State Police; Daviess County Sheriff’s Department; Owensboro Police Department; Henderson County Sheriff and Henderson City Police all assisted in the pursuit.
