On Friday night at approximately 5:50, the Elizabethtown Police Department responded to Hardin Memorial Hospital on the report of an ambulance being stolen.
Elizabethtown PD spokesman John Thomas said the ambulance was stolen from the ambulance bay at the hospital while it was waiting to transport a patient. Thomas said a GPS tracking system led police to an address on Hodgenville Road, where the abandoned ambulance was located.
Police searched the area and located 43-year-old Jason Chelf, of Hodgenville, who matched the suspect’s description. While authorities questioned Chelf, he “freely admitted to taking the ambulance,” Thomas said, although Chelf’s motives remain unclear.
He was arrested and charged with theft of an automobile over $10,000 and lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center. He is no longer listed as an inmate.
