A belligerent, apparently intoxicated Clarkson man was arrested Wednesday night after riding through the Elizabethtown Walmart on a motorized shopping cart.

Elizabethtown police arrested 28-year-old Mathew Lee Carbaugh after employees spotted him on the motorized scooter designed for handicap customers. Authorities said Carbaugh was “being very loud” and initially ignored the officer’s instruction to stop, according to the News-Enterprise.

Carbaugh, who was spotted by store employees making discourteous hand gestures and calling customers the devil, told police he was riding in the store “for his pleasure,” the newspaper reported. At some point while riding the scooter he lost one of his shoes.

He smelled of alcohol and had glassy eyes and slurred speech, and admitted to drinking at an Elizabethtown restaurant.

Carbaugh was arrested and charged with operating a non-motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants and second-degree disorderly conduct and lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center. He has since been released.

Carbaugh was arrested by Vine Grove police on September 11 on a charge of DUI, with aggravating circumstances.
