The middle school boys basketball teams returned to action Thursday following the holiday break and made the most of it, winning all three games at Cougar Gym against the visiting Edmonson County Wildcats.

In the opener, the sixth-grade Cougars allowed the Wildcats to score the game’s first 10 points, then blitzed them 38-17 the rest of the way to win 38-27. The seventh-graders got a double-double performance from guard Tayden Logsdon as they whipped the Wildcats 46-33 to improve to 12-6 on the season. Finally, the eighth-graders got scoring from 10 different players, including a game-high 18 points from Brayden Childress, and played nearly the entire second half with a running clock as they thrashed the Wildcats 56-27. They improved their record to 17-1 on the year.

SIXTH-GRADE GAME

The young Cougars started slowly in this game, not getting on the board until there was under a minute left in the first quarter. That allowed the Wildcats to score the game’s first 10 points. Grayson County trailed by five, 10-5 heading into the second quarter.

When Landon Haycraft hit a lay-in at the 2:49 mark of the second period, it capped an 11-0 run that put the Cougars in front 11-10.  Edmonson’s Carter Swihart  scored at the 2:08 mark to put the Wildcats back on top, but when Haycraft scored again with 2:02 remaining, the Cougars took a lead they would not give back. They led by four, 18-14 at the half.

Grayson County then scored the first six points of the third quarter capping a 24-4 run and giving the Cougars a 10-point lead, 24-14 with 4:02 left in the period. The Cougars led 30-17 heading into the final period of play.

Joshua Decker led the Wildcats with 12 points.

Haycraft led all scorers in the game with 15 points and he added three steals. Isaiah Poteet scored eight points and led the team on the glass with seven rebounds. Houston Brooks scored seven and pulled down three boards. Dawson Childress had five points and Hayden Robinson had three to complete the scoring.

SEVENTH-GRADE GAME

The Cougars were tied once at 2-2, but were never headed afterward. They led by five after the first period then increased their lead to 14 points, 28-14 at the half. Logsdon had a double-double at the half with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He finished with game highs of 19 points and 12 boards. Edmonson’s Noah Meredith scored all 14 points for the Wildcats and finished the game with 17.

A Landon Haycraft three with 2:05 left in the third quarter gave the Cougars their largest lead of the night, 20 points at 38-18. They led by 15, 38-23 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Mason Cariel joined Logsdon in double figure scoring with 12 points and he added five rebounds and four steals. Raidon Warf scored seven points, Haycraft had five, and Jeron Van Meter completed the scoring with three points.

EIGHTH-GRADE GAME

This game was pretty much decided in the first period when the Cougars blitzed the Wildcats 23-6. They led by 22 points, 35-13 at the half. Childress scored 14 of his 18 points in the first half.

The Cougars opened the second half with eight straight points to increase their lead to 30 points, 43-13. Brayden Renfrow hit a short jumper during the run that put the Cougars in front by 26 points and started the clock running continuously. The Cougars still led by 30 points, 45-15 as the final period got started.

In addition to his 18 points, Childress had a pair of rebounds, three assists and a team-high four steals. Renfrow and Dillon Horn both finished with eight points, with Horn adding four rebounds and Renfrow three assists.
