The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for Grayson and surrounding counties for 4:00 Wednesday morning until 1:00 Wednesday afternoon.
The NWS says wind chill is anticipated to be 15 to 20 degrees below zero throughout much of central Kentucky, generally along the Western Kentucky Parkway and Bluegrass Parkway, during the duration of the advisory. The temperature is forecast to drop from the mid-20s to the single-digits Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, with temps rising to only the mid-teens by Wednesday afternoon.
Frostbite and hypothermia are possible for people spending as little as 20 to 30 minutes outside. Officials urge people who must be outside to wear layered clothing, a hat and face covering, and stay dry if possible.
The first signs of frostbite include redness or pain in any skin area. Signs of hypothermia include confusion, drowsiness, slurred speech, a drop in blood pressure, shallow breathing, and a pinkish tint to the skin.
Anyone with hypothermia symptoms is in immediate danger and should receive medical help right away.
Additionally, be diligent on checking on the welfare of elderly or sick people, especially if they live alone or in isolated areas.
On Elmore Road, in Clarkson, an elderly woman was found in her yard Tuesday afternoon after she fell and suffered a possible broken arm. She had been in the yard, with temperatures in the mid-20s, for approximately two hours. She was transported to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Also, people with animals are encouraged to bring them inside or supply shelter and heat, if possible.
