A Cougar rally in the bottom of the seventh inning fell a run short as the visiting Edmonson County Wildcats held on to take a 5-4 victory Tuesday evening at Don Lee Field.
The Cougars trailed 5-1 at the start of the seventh, but a walk, two singles and a double produced three runs and left the potential tying run at second base with two outs. Wildcat starter and winner, Preston Dunn, then retired Cain Smith for the final out.
Dunn pitched all seven innings and allowed four runs, three of them earned, on seven hits. He struck out three and walked one.
Dain Hawkins started for the Cougars and had a rough outing, giving up five runs in the first two innings. He walked one and struck out one.
Noah Brown took over with two outs in the second inning and completely shut down the Wildcats. He retired 16 of the 17 batters he faced, including 11 straight. The only base runner he allowed reached on an error in the sixth inning.
The Cougars had been scheduled to play Hart County at home on Thursday, but with rain expected, that game has been moved up to today. Game time at Don Lee Field will be 5:30 p.m.
