A teenage girl has died after being struck by a train in eastern Jefferson County.
Police responded to the Fisherville area of Jefferson County Sunday night at approximately 9:30 on the report of two teenage girls being struck by a Norfolk Southern train on a trestle near the intersection of Taylorsville Road and Pope Lick Road.
The second girl was seriously injured and transported to a local hospital. Police have not released the identity of either victim.
There have been several deaths over the decades since the trestle was constructed. The area is said to be the home of the “Pope Lick Monster,” as Louisville folklore goes. The creature is said to be part man, part goat. The allure of the story draws many people to the train trestle, although there are clearly marked signs telling people to stay away.
“Norfolk Southern reminds the public that it is extremely dangerous and also trespassing to walk on or within the right-of-way of railroad tracks,” Norfolk said in a statement to WAVE3.com. “People should cross tracks only at designated crossings and use extreme caution. Norfolk Southern extends its condolences to everyone affected by this tragic incident.”
According to officials, last year 10 people died and 15 were injured in Kentucky while trespassing on train tracks.
