First responders from around Grayson County arrived in Iberia on Monday afternoon at approximately 3:15 on the report of a woman possibly jumping from Iberia bridge, in the 11100 of Peonia Road.
The Wax Fire Department (along with the department’s tracking dog), the Leitchfield Fire Department (which supplied boats, divers and sonar), the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, Grayson County Emergency Management Director Tony Willen, and Kentucky Fish and Wildlife officers arrived at the scene after a report that an approximately 50-year-old female from the Peonia area had possibly jumped off Iberia bridge. An unconfirmed report indicates she was dropped off near the bridge by a relative.
A welfare check had been conducted Monday morning on the female, but it’s unclear if law enforcement contacted the woman at that time.
Upon arriving at the scene, LFD and Wax fire set up a staging area at the Iberia boat ramp. Leitchfield fire then utilized its boats and sonar equipment as firefighters searched the water around the bridge for a body, with no success. There was very little current, according to officials, indicating to search and rescue workers that a body would not have traveled far from where it entered the water.
After searching the water for nearly two hours, and making several passes through the area near the Iberia bridge, the search was called off.
A parallel investigation took place while firefighters searched for the missing woman, as law enforcement conducted an investigation in an unsuccessful attempt to locate the missing person.
Police have not yet released the name of the woman.
The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation. Clarkson Police Chief Buck Meredith has assisted in the investigation.
K105 will have additional information on this story as it becomes available.
