A Louisville man is behind bars after admitting to hitting an eight-year-old girl with a shovel and raping her.

Cane Madden, 29, was arrested early Saturday after admitting to police that he struck the girl with a shovel, stole her iPad, and raped the victim, police said. Doctors at Norton Children’s Hospital said the girl suffered a skull fracture and several cuts and contusions to her head.

Authorities located Madden near where the attack occurred, in the 1700 block of Hale Avenue, near Dixie Highway, and later questioned him. He admitted to the rape, as well as assaulting the girl with a shovel and his fists.

He was charged with first-degree rape (victim under the age of 12), first-degree assault and first-degree robbery. Madden is being held in Louisville Metro Corrections on a $1 million bond.

In 2017, Madden sexually assaulted a woman and bit off part of her ear, according to court documents. In February of this year, and after six mental health evaluations, Madden was found incompetent to stand trial on the charges related to the attack.
