A death investigation is underway after the body of a missing Peonia woman was found.
At approximately 11:30 Wednesday morning, a boater discovered the body of 50-year-old Cheryl Howell floating in Nolin River Lake’s Iberia Cove.
Authorities were alerted on Monday afternoon at about 3:15 that Howell may have jumped from Iberia bridge. A nearly two hour sonar search by the Leitchfield Fire Department failed to turn up anything unusual.
Howell’s body was found Wednesday about 1500 feet from Iberia bridge, according to Grayson County Coroner Joe Brad Hudson, making it not impossible, but unlikely that Howell jumped from the bridge because of the lack of a strong current on Monday. It’s unclear at this point where Howell entered the water.
Hudson said the time and cause of death are pending autopsy. A toxicology test will also be performed, which is standard procedure in cases such as this.
Along with Hudson, the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, Leitchfield Police Department, Leitchfield and Wax Fire Departments, and Emergency Management Director Tony Willen were on the scene Wednesday.
The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office is leading the death investigation.
