A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet inspector from Leitchfield narrowly escaped critical injuries after being hit by a motorist in a work zone on Owensboro Road (Hwy 54).
Thursday morning at approximately 11:30, 40-year-old inspector Johnathan L. Nunn was on a paving machine, in the 6800 block of Owensboro Road, observing as a worker fixed a “line” left in the newly paved roadway, according to the accident report.
When the job was finished, Nunn told Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Clay Boone he looked both ways before stepping off the paver, when he was struck by the driver’s side mirror and tire of a 2017 Ford Expedition, being driven east by 16-year-old Amber Wright, of Shepherdsville.
Nunn was transported to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center by EMS with severe bruising and a multitude of scrapes and cuts.
Both Wright and one of her passengers, 41-year-old Amanda Geary, of Shepherdsville, told Boone they were “probably” traveling 35 miles per hour “but no faster than 45 miles per hour,” as they passed through the work zone. The accident report states that Wright was traveling “too fast for conditions.”
According to the accident report, prior to Wright striking Nunn, she passed several cars that were lined up after having been stopped by a flagger. She also tried to pass the flagger, but the worker stopped Wright and placed her vehicle at the front of the line. When allowed to resume driving, Wright struck Nunn.
The Leitchfield Fire Department assisted at the scene.
