Police said an elderly Bowling Green woman accidentally killed herself after falling on a knife.

Shirley L. Brince, 71, was found injured on a sidewalk on Durbin Street, just west of the Western Kentucky University campus, on New Year’s Eve. She was transported to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The Bowling Green Police Department said video surveillance from the area showed Brince walking alone on the sidewalk when she stumbled and fell, causing a kitchen knife in her shoulder bag to stab her in her left side, along Brince’s belt line.

Two vehicles stopped, with the occupants helping Brince to her feet before driving off. Brince then walked a few more steps before again falling.
