A Caldwell County woman has been jailed after killing her estranged husband.

Wednesday morning at approximately 6:00, the Princeton Police Department responded to the 100 block of Ratliff Street on the report of a stabbing. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found 43-year-old Matt Smothers, of Princeton, had suffered a stab wound to his leg, according to media reports.

He was transported to Caldwell County Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

A witness told police that Smothers’ estranged wife, 42-year-old Kimberly D. Smothers, also of Princeton, had arrived at the victim’s residence earlier in the morning. The witness told authorities the two argued.

Further investigation showed that during the argument, Kimberly Smothers stabbed the victim in the leg and fled the area. She was arrested just a little before 7:00 Wednesday morning when she went back to her estranged husband’s home.

Kimberly Smothers was transported to the Caldwell County Jail where she’s been charged with murder. She’s being held on a $500,000 cash bond.
