The Leitchfield and Elizabethtown Police Departments released statements on Sunday squashing apparently unfounded social media rumors.

LPD’s statements, released only a few hours after a statement from Elizabethtown police, indicate rumors regarding an attempted abduction at a business are apparently untrue, as officials say no such incident has been reported to law enforcement.

The EPD statement does not go into detail about a rumored incident in that city, saying instead, ”We’re not even interested in sharing the details of those (rumors) at this point, because we don’t want to spread them further.”

The Leitchfield PD’s statement, found on its Facebook page, reads as follows:

We have been receiving numerous messages and phone calls in regards to social media posts.

There have been no reported incidents involving an attempted abduction at any local businesses.

We cannot verify that this incident happened, nor can we say that it did not. As always, we urge anyone with information about any type of crime to report it. If this incident is true in any fashion, it should have been reported to the police. If reported, rest assured we will absolutely investigate and do our best to resolve any potential threat to our community.

For now, we urge people to not pass along unverified rumors and reports that may not be true. We all have seen hoaxes in the past that have gone viral, leading to unnecessary public fear and concern.

I can assure our citizens that if we become aware of any significant threat to public safety, we will be upfront in informing the public and using any resources to keep our citizens safe.

The statement issued by the Elizabethtown PD, also on its Facebook page, is as follows:

All right folks. We’ve been getting messages and calls all weekend about a couple of Facebook posts that have spread like wildfire about some possible incidents in our area. wWe’re not even interested in sharing the details of those at this point, because we don’t want to spread them further. If you’ve seen them you know what we’re talking about.

Here’s the situation from our standpoint: not one of these incidents has been reported to us. Consequently, we cannot verify that these incidents happened, nor we can say with certainty that they didn’t happen. As always, we urge anyone in our city who has information about any type of crime to report it to the police. If these incidents are true in any fashion, they should have been reported to the police. If reported, we will absolutely investigate them and do our best to resolve any potential danger to our community.

For now, we urge people not to pass along unverified rumors and reports that may or may not be true. We have seen hoaxes in the past that have gone viral, leading to unnecessary public fear and concern. I can assure our city that if we become aware of any significant threat to public safety, we will be out in front informing out citizens and using all of the resources at our disposal to keep our city safe.
