A Vine Grove police officer is credited with saving the life of a 12-day-old baby boy who stopped breathing.
The Vine Grove Police Department said that Tuesday morning, Officers Lamar Jones and Keith Oulsey were dispatched to a residence near where the two officers were patrolling when the child, who has a lung condition, quit breathing.
Upon arriving, the officers found the baby, Brixten Muir, “in distress and not breathing. Jones performed mouth-to-mouth breathing on the infant and he began breathing, but it was labored,” police said.
Both officers assisted in the medical care of the infant until EMS and the Vine Grove Fire Department arrived.
“The family’s watching, so I just go in and lay on my stomach and get down with the baby,” Jones told WDRB in a Skype interview. “I pulled his socks off. The legs were blue, the body was blue. I pulled his shirt up and then I just opened his mouth to see if it was clear, and then I gave him one big breath.”
Because of social distancing guidelines, the family was not allowed to ride in the ambulance to Hardin Memorial Hospital, but Jones again stepped in and gave the family a ride to the hospital. Brixten is recovering at Norton Children’s Hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.
The baby’s grandmother, Carolyn Muir, told WDRB, “They didn’t think about, ‘Is anybody infected? Is anybody sick?’ They just came in, and they took over, and they did what they needed to do to save this child’s life … and I’m so grateful. We’re all grateful.”
Jones will receive the Vine Grove Police Department Lifesaving Award at the city’s next city council meeting. He will also be nominated for the Hardin County Fire Chief’s Lifesaving Award at their banquet later this year.
“There was no hesitation, no apprehension, no social distancing,” the Vine Grove PD said in a Facebook post. “We always have, and always will continue to serve the people of Vine Grove and the Great State of Ky at all costs. That’s what we do!”
