An intoxicated mother has been arrested after driving nearly 100 mph with her teenage son in the car as they traveled on the Western Kentucky Parkway.

Monday afternoon at approximately 4:45, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Fred Norder received information about a reckless driver on the eastbound parkway, near the 99 mile marker. As Norder arrived in the area, he observed a 1999 Mercury Sable traveling at nearly 100 miles per hour. The sergeant conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle at the 108 mile marker.

Upon making contact with the driver, 40-year-old Bronwen Rachelle Dowdy, of Benton, Norder noticed her teenage son asleep in the front passenger seat, according to the arrest citation. While speaking with Dowdy, “she appeared to be impaired, as her speech was slurred and her responses to my questions were lethargic,” Norder wrote in the citation.

Deputy Jason Luedke arrived on scene and conducted a field sobriety test on the suspect and arrested Dowdy.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies located “numerous medications and a .22-revolver.”

Dowdy was charged with DUI, endangering the welfare of a minor, reckless driving, and speeding. Her son was turned over to Child Protective Services, while Dowdy was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center. She is no longer listed as an inmate.

Constable Mark Stanton assisted at the scene.
