Grayson County has recorded its second coronavirus (COVID-19) death in two days.
Judge-Executive Kevin Henderson announced at his daily COVID-19 briefing Wednesday afternoon that a 101-year-old woman, Alma Catherine Shartzer, of Duff, died late Tuesday afternoon as a result of the virus. Ms. Shartzer was a resident of Grayson Nursing & Rehabilitation.
This marks the third Grayson Nursing & Rehabilitation resident to die from the disease following the deaths of two 96-year-old men, William Dean Smith, of Leitchfield, who died on April 17, and Sam Morman, of Falls of Rough, who passed away on Tuesday.
Two more cases of coronavirus have been diagnosed in Grayson County, as of Wednesday afternoon — an 18-year-old woman, an employee of Grayson Nursing & Rehabilitation, and 60-year-old woman, an employee at Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center. The 60-year-old woman is the third Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center employee to test positive for the virus since Sunday, April 26.
There are now 65 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Grayson County.
Fifty (76.9 percent) of Grayson County’s COVID-19 cases have been residents or employees of Grayson Nursing & Rehabilitation (33 residents, 14 employees), or Spring View Nursing & Rehabilitation (3 residents).
Of note, of the 33 residents of Grayson Nursing & Rehabilitation who have tested positive for the virus, 11 are currently asymptomatic, according to Henderson.
Three victims are currently hospitalized with the virus: a 66-year-old man in critical condition, a 56-year-old woman stable condition and a 59-year-old woman in stable condition.
There have been, according to officials, 453 COVID-19 tests administered in Grayson County, with 343 of those tests returned negative for the virus. Forty-five tests are pending.
Seventeen (26.2 percent) victims have recovered.
