An elderly Caneyville couple avoided serious injury when one of them suffered a medical emergency while driving on Shrewsbury Road.

Wednesday night at approximately 8:00, Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins and Deputies Rick Mehlbauer and Jason Luedke, the Leitchfield Fire Department and EMS responded to the 4800 block of Shrewsbury Road on the report of a single-vehicle accident.

Upon arriving at the scene, authorities found Eric and Latitia Smith injured in a Chrysler Town and Country minivan.

Based on marks at the scene, the vehicle, traveling south on Shrewsbury Road, crossed into the northbound lane and left the road, traveling in a ditch line for nearly 100 yards before turning about 70 degrees, crossing both lanes of traffic and again leaving the roadway.

The minivan traveled down an embankment and continued for about 120 feet before grazing a utility pole and becoming stuck in deep mud.

The driver, Eric Smith, suffered a likely medical emergency, leading to the accident. Both victims had to be removed from the vehicle by first responders.

The couple suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center by EMS.
