Only one newly confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19) was announced on Friday at Judge-Executive Kevin Henderson’s briefing.

The newest victim is an 82-year-old resident of Grayson Nursing & Rehabilitation (GNR). There has now been 93 cases of the virus diagnosed in Grayson County.

Forty-four of those victims are GNR residents and 16 staff members. The county’s other nursing home, Spring View Nursing & Rehabilitation, has had 12 residents test positive. Spring View has not had any staff members test positive for the virus.

In total, 72 (77.4 percent) of the county’s COVID-19 cases are tied to the county’s two nursing homes, while five Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center employees have tested positive for the virus.

Five people are currently undergoing treatment in a hospital.

A total of 667 tests have been administered in Grayson County with 536 of the tests returned negative. Thirty-eight test results are pending, and 30 (32.3 percent) victims have recovered from the virus.

On Thursday, a new COVID-19 fatality was announced by Henderson and the Grayson County Health Department, but no details were released on the latest victim. Henderson, at Friday’s briefing, said the victim was 87-year-old Oma Maerean Hayes, of Morgantown, a resident of GNR.

Oma M. Hayes

Henderson, as is his custom out of respect for the family of the fatal victims and the victim, read a brief biography of Oma’s life.

She was born February 20, 1933, in Butler County. The daughter of Simon and Martha Henderson Dockery. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Chapel Union Baptist Church, the Sunshine Club and secretary for the Chapel Union Sunday School.

Oma is survived by her three children, Brad Hayes, Karen Hayes Fentress and Timothy Hayes. Eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren also survive.

Other than her parents, she was proceeded in death by her husband Roscoe Hayes, one son Barry Hayes, two brothers, Carman and Wallace Dockery, and one sister Vivian Brooks.

She will be laid to rest at a private graveside service on Saturday May 9 in the Chapel Union Baptist Church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made in the form of donations to Chapel Union Baptist Church or Grayson Manor nursing facility.

The family wanted to share with everyone how much they appreciate Grayson Manor for all the help they have given them over the past two-and-a-half years, and for making her last days the best she had in a long time.

The nurses and aides would Facetime the family from time to time, whenever they could not go see her anymore. They want to thank the nurses and aides for this. And for the aides who stayed with her until she passed on Thursday.
