At his daily briefing, Gov. Andy Beshear on Friday said over 250 new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) were confirmed in Kentucky over the previous 24 hours.
The 258 new cases the governor reported raise the state’s total to 13,454 cases of the virus.
“I know Kentuckians have what it takes to reopen as safely as possible,” Beshear said. “We must continue to strike the balance between supporting our local economies and still cutting our contacts significantly.”
Two new deaths were also reported on Friday, increasing Kentucky’s death toll to 522 (3.9 percent fatality rate). The deaths reported Friday include a 95-year-old man from Franklin County and a 68-year-old man from Harlan County.
Officials said 2,494 (18.5 percent) people have been hospitalized since the onset of the pandemic, with 339 patients currently in a hospital. To date, 978 (7.3 percent) victims have undergone treatment in ICU, with 64 people currently in intensive care.
At least 3,516 (26.1 percent) Kentuckians have recovered from the virus, and 341,140 (7.8 percent of the population) COVID-19 tests have been administered in the state.
