A standoff that began around 1:00 Sunday afternoon in Elizabethtown ended peacefully about nine hours later.

The Elizabethtown Police Department arrested 35-year-old David Cooke, of Elizabethtown, after he fled to his home from a domestic disturbance, barricading himself in his residence.

The incident began when authorities were dispatched to a domestic disturbance at approximately 1:00 Sunday afternoon on Wellington Way. While officers were en route, state police said Cooke fled the scene, traveling the five miles to his home on South Miles Street, a densely residential area in the heart of Elizabethtown.

Elizabethtown police spokesman Chris Denham told the News-Enterprise that the department called in its Special Response Team and crisis negotiators, who were in contact with Cooke by phone from the beginning of the standoff.

At around 10:00 Sunday night, the standoff came to a peaceful end.

Cooke was charged with attempted murder (of a police officer), second-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree unlawful imprisonment, and first-degree fleeing or evading police.

He is lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center.
