Lady Cougars come back for 3-1 district win over Whitesville

After losing the first set, the Lady Cougar volleyball team came back to take the next three sets for a 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-22, 25-14 ) 12th District win over visiting Whitesville Trinity on Tuesday.

Senior Ella Robinson led the team with 18 kills and 27 digs. Senior Chloe Cox added 13 kills and 15 digs, and senior libero Bailey Richardson had 21 digs. Senior setter Brieanna Boll had 30 assists.

Grayson County came out lethargic at the start of the first set, quickly falling behind 1-6, and eventually falling behind by as many as eight points, 11-19.

At that point they began showing signs of life and pulled back to within a point of the lead twice, at 19-20, and 22-23 before giving up the first set 23-25.

The Lady Cougars led by as many as eight points in the second set before allowing the Lady Raiders to come back on them. Whitesville had a set point at 22-24 but Robinson put away a kill to give the serve back to Grayson County.

A Robinson kill that tied the game was followed by a Whitesville hitting error, giving the Lady Cougars a set point at 25-24. Cox then put away a kill to even the match at a set apiece.

The third set was close from the start with neither team leading by more than two points until the Lady Cougars broke through for a five-point lead at 21-16. Trinity was able to close back to within a point of the lead at 23-22 but Boll had a block at the net to give the serve back to the Lady Cougars.

Robinson then came up with a kill to give Grayson County the set win and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Grayson County led the whole way in the fourth set. Leading 10-6, Robinson took the serve and reeled off four straight points, including a pair of aces to increase the lead to eight points, 14-6.

They were still leading by six points, 18-12, when senior Kenzie Skaggs took the serve. Cox had two kills and a block in a 5-0 run that made it 23-12. Cox then had a kill to take it to match point at 24-13.

Whitesville’s Hannah Nash followed with a kill to stave off defeat, but Robinson put away a kill on the next serve to give the Lady Cougars the match.

The win was Grayson County’s seventh in a row and gave them a 9-1 record for the season, their best start in program history.
