On Tuesday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the most coronavirus cases, by a wide margin, ever reported in a single day as the governor said 4,151 new cases of the virus were confirmed in Kentucky over the previous 24 hours.
The new cases increase the state’s COVID-19 victim count to 183,168.
Officials also reported 35 coronavirus-related deaths, the most deaths announced in a single day, raising the commonwealth’s death toll to 1,943 (1.1 percent fatality rate). Kentucky has now had 231 COVID-19-related deaths over the last 13 days (17.8 per day).
Those reported lost to the virus on Tuesday include two men, ages 57 and 66, and two women, ages 79 and 86, from Grayson County; a 70-year-old man from Boyd County; a 75-year-old man from Calloway County; an 82-year-old man from Christian County; a 96-year-old woman from Daviess County; a 95-year-old woman from Graves County; a 93-year-old woman from Henderson County; an 87-year-old man from Hopkins County; six women, ages 61, 64, 76, 77, 77 and 80, and seven men, ages 62, 64, 64, 66, 72, 73 and 94, from Jefferson County; a 62-year-old woman from Jessamine County; a 76-year-old man from Kenton County; a 79-year-old woman from Marshall County; a 66-year-old woman from Mason County; two men, ages 59 and 64, from McCracken County; an 88-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man from Monroe County; a 65-year-old man from Montgomery County; a 93-year-old woman from Robertson County; and an 82-year-old man from Union County.
“There’s no way to sugarcoat it,” Beshear lamented. “Today is the very worst day we have had for reporting on the spread of the coronavirus, and it is the deadliest day that we have had. This is exponential growth. If we don’t all do our part, if we try to be the exception, then slowing this thing down won’t work and we will lose a lot more Kentuckians we love and care about.”
The rolling seven-day positivity rate jumped from 9.42 percent on Monday to 9.59 percent on Tuesday.
Hospitalizations rose by 36 patients to 1,777, the most victims ever hospitalized in a single day. COVID-19 hospitalizations have now risen by 68 patients over the last two day.
Intensive care patients went up by 20 to 421, and people on ventilators also rose from Monday’s 229 to 241 on Tuesday.
Since the onset of the pandemic, 10,190 (5.6 percent) people have been hospitalized, and 2,482 (1.4 percent) patients have been treated in ICUs.
At least 28,486 (15.8 percent) Kentuckians have recovered from the virus and 2.81 million COVID-19 tests have been administered in the state.
