Cougars outlast Whitesville Trinity, 58-54

The Cougar boys put three players into double figures last Friday evening in the Cougar Den to win a back-and-forth game, 58-54 over visiting Whitesville Trinity.

Sophomore River Blanton led the way for the Cougars with 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Juniors Keegan Sharp and Chandler McCrady both scored 14 points, with Sharp adding six rebounds.

There were four ties and a lead change in a first quarter that saw Trinity holding a two-point advantage, 14-12 heading into the second period.

Trinity led by as many as five points in the second period, 17-12 at the 7:31 mark. A 10-footer by Sharp at the 2:38 mark gave the Cougars a brief, 20-19 lead. Trinity scored the next five points to lead by four, 24-20, but Sharp hit a runner at 1:08 that cut the deficit to just two points at the half, 24-22.

There were four lead changes in the third quarter which ended with Trinity holding a narrow, three-point lead, 36-33 heading into the final period of play.

Trinity then opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back buckets to take their largest lead of the night, seven points, 40-33 with 7:32 left to play. Two Sharp three-pointers and a lay-in by Blanton completed an 8-0 Cougar run that saw them retake the lead, 41-40 with 5:52 left.

The score was tied four times in the next four minutes with Trinity’s Bailey Wright burying a three at 1:52 to tie it one last time at 48-48. Blanton then hit a lay-in with 1:42 left to give the Cougars the lead for good, 50-48.

Grayson County outscored Trinity 8-6 down the stretch to win by four.

Junior Hunter Tomes scored eight points and pulled down five rebounds. Sophomore Dillon Horn added five points and seven rebounds, while senior Bret Payton closed out the scoring with two points.
