Coming off three straight weeks of declining COVID-19 positive tests in Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear on Monday announced 1,623 new cases were confirmed over the previous 24 hours.

The new cases increase the state’s COVID-19 victim count to 364,507 (about one case per 12.2 Kentucky residents).

“We have seen our positivity rate decreasing,” Beshear said, “That shows our decrease in cases numbers isn’t because of any change in testing, there is less disease out there. Fewer people by percentage are getting the virus week over week.”

Officials reported 35 deaths, raising the death toll to 3,780 (one percent fatality rate). The state has now had 719 COVID-19 deaths over the last 17 days, an average of 42.3 per day.

The rolling seven-day positivity rose slightly from Sunday’s 8.81 percent to 8.85 percent on Monday.

Hospitalizations dropped by 13 patients to 1,314, while intensive care patients dropped by 17 to 337. Victims on ventilators rose by five people to 178.

Since the onset of the pandemic, 16,725 (4.6 percent) people have been hospitalized, with 3,568 (one percent) patients treated in intensive care.

At least 43,492 (12 percent) Kentuckians have recovered from the virus, and over four million COVID-19 tests have been administered in the state.
