A Pikeville mother has been jailed after leaving her two small children outside in the rain and physically abusing both of her sons.

Pikeville police arrested 39-year-old Holly Abshire after authorities were alerted that her two sons, six- and eight-years-old, were found by a neighbor shivering in the cold rain outside their home Monday night about 9:00. One of the children was not wearing a shirt or shoes, Kentucky State Police said.

The children stayed with a neighbor as police checked on the mother, who was seen through a window unresponsive. Troopers entered the home and tried to wake up Abshire, but were unsuccessful. They were preparing to administer Narcan when Abshire awoke and began yelling obscenities at the troopers.

Abshire, while being placed under arrest, was combative and shoved a trooper when she was told her children were found outside.

The six-year-old told police, “Mommy beats me up,” adding that she treated him bad because she was “sick from medicine,” troopers said, while the eight-year-old accused his mother of slamming him into the ground and stepping on him. The boy displayed marks on his back, shoulder and neck, police said.

Abshire was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal abuse, two counts of fourth-degree assault, menacing, and resisting arrest. She’s being held in the Pike County Detention Center.
