Grayson County High School’s Kenny Fukuhara has resigned as the head coach of the boys’ soccer program to accept a principal position in Nelson County.
Fukuhara took over the Cougar boys prior to the 2016 season and immediately took them to new heights.
In his five seasons, he amassed a 40-48-8 record, won two district championships (the program had only won one prior to his arrival), and won the team’s first-ever game in the regional tournament.
Fukuhara provided the following statement to K105 as a message to the Grayson County community.
“Over the past 5 years, it has been an honor of a lifetime to lead the Grayson County High School Boys Soccer program. Since taking the position, our mission has always been the same: develop kids into good people first, soccer players second.
We have had many accomplishments over the past 5 years. We put together our longest winning streak in program history in 2018. That same year we won our first ever Regional Tournament match. In 2018 and 2019 we were able to have the first back-to-back winning seasons in program history. In 2019 and 2020 we captured the District Championship two years in a row #BacktoBack!
However, none of that compares to the environment we have created. Inside our program we have been able to develop a deep sense of family with each other. We truly loved and cared for another, and it became contagious. These kids learned to put their differences aside, understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and build an addictive and positive environment.
With all of that being said, my goal was never to be a soccer coach forever. My goal has always been to progress in my career as an educator and move into a school leadership role.
I have been offered and I have accepted the Principal position at The Academy with Nelson County Schools. Therefore, I am officially resigning as Head Boys Soccer Coach at Grayson County High School effective July 15th.
To all of our families, thank you for your support and dedication during my time.
To all of the players, I love you guys. #FAMILYon3″
The Cougars are scheduled to open the 2021 regular season on August 12th at home against North Bullitt.
