The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Thursday investigated a report of a laser being pointed at an aircraft.

Thursday night at approximately 9:25, Grayson County Central Dispatch received a report from officials at Owensboro-Daviess County Airport that the pilot of an aircraft that took off from the airport said a laser had been pointed at the plane.

Officials said the laser was pointed from somewhere on Locust Hill Road, about eight miles west of Caneyville off Richland Road.

Deputy Sean Fentress responded to the area, but airport officials were unable to further narrow the scope of where the laser originated.

No other similar reports were received.

According to the FBI, the primary hazard for pilots is becoming distracted or temporarily flash-blinded by the light from a laser. The laser light, upon making contact with the aircraft, can spread as wide as six feet, blocking the pilot’s vision.

Pointing a laser at an aircraft is a federal offense and can result in up to five years in prison if found guilty.
