A medical emergency is thought to be the cause of a fatal accident on I-65 in Hardin County.

Kentucky State Police said troopers responded to the accident at the 88-mile marker of northbound I-65 Saturday night at approximately 7:30.

State police said the preliminary investigation showed the driver of a northbound 2003 Jeep Liberty “most likely had a medical emergency,” resulting in the Jeep striking a concrete barrier. The Jeep then crossed all three northbound lanes before overturning and catching fire.

The driver, who police have not yet identified, was removed from the burning vehicle by passing motorists, and transported to Baptist Health Hardin and later pronounced dead by the Hardin County Coroner’s Office.

The accident remains under investigation by Trooper Isaac Atwell.
