A Pulaski County man has been jailed after perpetrating a scam against an elderly Willisburg man.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office arrested 30-year-old Travis Beach on Monday and charged with theft by unlawful taking and knowingly abusing/neglecting an adult.

Beach is accused of scamming the 75-year-old victim, who has dementia, out of $8,000 by tricking the victim into letting men asphalt his driveway. The victim was told the men would asphalt his driveway for $80. But when the elderly man handed Beach the check, the suspect made it out for $8,000.

Beach told police he and others have been pulling the scam for an extended period of time. They are suspected of scamming elderly residents of Nelson, Washington and Mercer counties.

“The suspect, he talked to us last night and said they start their day going to a place with recycled asphalt and they have been coming this way quite a bit and in Nelson County,” Washington County Chief Deputy Lynn Davis told WKYT.com. “They make a deal with someone who has a poor driveway and dump the asphalt.”

The $8,000 was returned to the victim.

Beach was lodged in the Marion County Detention Center. More arrests are expected.
