A Hardin County teenage has been jailed after leading police on a 39-mile high-speed pursuit.

Nathan R. Sawyer, 19, of Radcliff, was spotted by Kentucky State Police Friday morning at approximately 1:00 “recklessly switching lanes and nearly striking civilian motorists on several occasions” on Hwy 31-W in West Point, The News-Enterprise reports.

When a trooper attempted to stop Sawyer, who was driving a 2009 Ford Focus, the suspect fled at over 100 miles per hour.

During the pursuit, which lasted over 30 minutes, Sawyer twice avoided tire deflation devices and at least once drove in the opposite lane of travel. He is also accused of driving on a sidewalk and around a lowered train crossing signal, the newspaper reports.

Sawyer ran out of gas in Jefferson County where he was arrested.

The suspect was charged with first-degree fleeing or evading police, first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree criminal mischief, speeding 26 mph or more over the limit, reckless driving, and possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle, along with non-moving violations.

Sawyer is being held in the Hardin County Detention Center on a $5,000 cash bond.
