A fire has destroyed a Big Clifty home and killed a family pet.

The East Grayson, Clarkson, Leitchfield, and West 84 (Hardin Co.) Fire Departments responded to the blaze at 2036 Hardin Springs Road.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found the wood-frame structure nearly fully engulfed in flames, with many materials surrounding the home in danger of catching fire. Furthermore, a mobile home is located about 75 yards up a hillside from the burning structure.

Firefighters battled the blaze and hosed down the surrounding flammable materials but were unable to save the residence.

No injuries were reported, but a dog perished in the fire.

The fire has rekindled multiple times (not an uncommon occurrence), with the latest rekindling occurring Wednesday afternoon. One of the former occupants of the home told K105 that the latest fire began as a small fire inside the home that quickly spread to the entire structure and beyond after a sustained wind blew through the area.

The Wednesday afternoon fire began crawling up the hillside toward the mobile home, but East Grayson firefighters arrived and stopped the flames from spreading.

The original fire is thought to have originated in a wood burning stove, according to Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall.

The American Red Cross was on scene Wednesday afternoon providing assistance to the family.
