Two people have been killed and two others injured in a shooting at a Henderson homeless shelter.

The Henderson Police Department said that Thursday night at approximately 7:40, officers were dispatched to “multiple people shot” at Harbor House Christian Center at 804 Clay Street.

Upon police arriving, they discovered four victims had been shot. One of the victims, 67-year-old Steve Wathen, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The three other victims were transported to area hospitals, with 44-year-old Chad Holmes later pronounced deceased. The remaining two victims, a 33-year-old man and 41-year-old man, survived the attack.

All the victims were residents of the facility.

Based on eyewitness statements, police said officers were able to identify the shooting suspect as 37-year-old Kenneth Brandon Gibbs, of Henderson, a resident of the shelter. Witnesses told police he fled the scene in a Toyota Prius.

At approximately 9:47 Thursday evening, the Prius was located at Hayes Boat Ramp. Officers flooded the area, Henderson police said, and made contact with Gibbs as he was walking near the Atkinson Park softball fields, not far from where the Prius was found.

He was taken into custody without incident. Police said he was in possession of a handgun.

Gibbs was charged with two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder and lodged in the Henderson County Detention Center on a $500,000 cash bond.
