A daycare worker who dropped a baby has been charged with criminal abuse of a child.

Tyeisha J. Smith, 22, of Berea, was arrested by Richmond police and charged with first-degree criminal abuse of a child younger than 12.

Smith initially told police during the investigation that the baby fell backward off a chair, but later recanted and informed detectives she dropped the five-month-old child, who suffered multiple brain bleeds.

Furthermore, she failed to immediately inform anyone at the daycare she dropped the infant because, according to police, she did not want to disappoint her coworkers.

The baby was transported to UK Kentucky Children’s Hospital after becoming unresponsive for several minutes and suffering what appeared to be seizures.

“Medical staff allegedly told the investigating detective (that Smith’s) inaction delayed diagnoses and caused the victim to experience worse symptoms,” according to the Richmond Register.

Smith is being held in the Madison County Detention Center.
