A man who broke several of his newborn baby’s bones has been sentenced to prison.

Brent Bishop, 32, of Louisville, pled guilty in Jefferson County to second-degree child abuse and was sentenced to five years in prison.

In April 2021, EMS responded to Bishop’s home on a report that his 9-day-old baby had suffered a broken arm. Once at Norton Children’s Hospital, though, it was discovered that the baby had suffered a two broken wrists, two broken legs and a broken arm.

A pediatric forensic nurse who examined the baby, the Courier Journal reports, found the injuries were “diagnostic of inflicted physical abuse” and were “severe and show extreme indifference for human life,” according to Bishop’s arrest citation.

After the baby was examined, police conducted a search warrant at Bishop’s residence and located cocaine, methamphetamine, oxycodone and other drugs.

Bishop and the child’s mother, in addition to facing child abuse charges, were then charged with multiple drug charges. Those charges, though, were later dropped after a judge ruled “police did not have a search warrant to look for evidence of drug dealing when the drugs were found,” the newspaper reports.

The baby’s mother was not charged with abusing her baby because surveillance footage from inside the residence showed Bishop abused the baby when she was not home.
