A Leitchfield man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after fighting with police trying to serve a warrant for a vicious assault the suspect is accused of committing Wednesday morning.

The Leitchfield Police Department initially responded Wednesday morning at approximately 7:20 to the 400 block of South Main Street on the report of a male suffering serious injuries, including a possible broken arm, sustained during an altercation.

The victim was transported by EMS to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center.

“After a thorough investigation and execution of a search warrant at the scene of the assault, evidence supported an intentional act of violence had taken place at 517 Leavette Avenue,” according to Leitcfield Police Department Detective Sgt. Ian Renfrow. “It was found that the victim was struck numerous times in the face and head by a large piece of 4×4 lumber, approximately three to four feet in length.”

The assault, police said, began inside the Leavette Avenue residence. As the victim attempted to flee, the suspect pursued him into the front yard where he was struck again with a surveying rod, causing further serious injury to his arm, according to police.

An arrest warrant was then issued for the assault suspect, Russell Krahwinkel, 35, of Leitchfield.

Officers spent several hours attempting to locate Krahwinkel, who eluded authorities by hiding in a wooded area near the Leavette Avenue residence.

Then, at approximately 3:30 Wednesday afternoon, Krahwinkel was located by LPD Officers Eugene Cain and Bart Glenn hiding in a garage at the Leavette Avenue property.

Krahwinkel resisted and fought with officers, who called for backup. Cain and Glenn, though, were eventually able to restrain Krahwinkel, and within minutes, Grayson County Sgt. Clay Boone and Deputies Nick Pruitt, Erik Franklin and Wally Ritter, Clarkson Officer Jordan Jones, and LPD Assistant Chief Brandon Cook (who was off duty), arrived on scene.

Krahwinkel was transported to the Grayson County Detention Center where he was charged with first-degree assault and resisting arrest.
