The verdict is in from a Kentucky Fish & Wildlife biologist regarding the type of animal that was photographed and videotaped in Leitchfield on Friday.

After an article with photos of the animal were published Friday evening by K105, hundreds of people weighed in with opinions on what the animal might be, with the three most popular theories being a large house cat, a bobcat and mountain lion.

Kentucky Fish & Wildlife Sgt. Thomas Blackwell sent the video and photograph of the animal to a state biologist who said the animal is a “large house cat.”

“The neck isn’t long enough to be a bigger cat like a mountain lion or cougar,” Blackwell said.

The large and apparently healthy house cat was spotted on a hillside adjacent to the Leitchfield Walmart Friday afternoon. Although the animal was not deemed a bobcat, the big cats are in Grayson County. In fact, according to Kentucky Fish & Wildlife, bobcats are found in every county in Kentucky.

Mountain lions, on the other hand, are not normally found in the Bluegrass State, although seven years ago a mountain lion was shot and killed in Bourbon County by a Fish & Wildlife officer.
