A Barren County deputy jailer arrested earlier this week for stealing from an inmate was captured on video surveillance pilfering a large amount of cash from the inmate’s wallet.

Kentucky State Police responded on Tuesday to the Barren County Detention Center to investigate a theft complaint involving deputy jailer Dustin T. Young, 25, of Edmonton.

State police said earlier this week that its preliminary investigation indicated Young stole money from a current inmate at the jail. The Herald-Leader reported on Thursday that Young stole $1,500 from an inmate’s wallet while booking the inmate into a hold cell early Tuesday morning. The theft was recorded on surveillance video.

While being questioned by state police, Young admitted taking the cash and said he was going to “pay bills and buy a firearm with the money,” the Lexington newspaper reports.

Young had been employed at the jail for approximately one year. He has since been terminated.

He was charged with theft by unlawful taking (over $1,000) and lodged in the Warren County Regional Jail.
