A woman has been shot in Louisville after waving a gun while standing in the middle of a densely residential street.

Sunday night at approximately 5:45, Louisville Metro Police responded to the 9100 block of Chenault Road in Valley Station on the report of a woman standing in the middle of the road waving a handgun.

Upon arriving at the scene, police told the woman to drop the gun several times but she refused, according to a report by WAVE3.com. The woman then advanced towards officers, resulting in police firing at and striking the suspect.

LMPD spokesperson Alicia Smiley told the Louisville television station that the woman “was alert, conscious and talking while being transported to the hospital.”

The woman’s identity has not yet been released.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greensburg issued the following statement on the shooting:

“I have spoken to LMPD Chief Gwinn-Villaroel regarding an officer involved shooting this evening. The Chief informed me the incident involved a woman brandishing a firearm on a residential street, who advanced on LMPD officers and, after several verbal commands, the officers responded and the suspect was struck by gunfire. LMPD rendered immediate aid and her condition is unknown. I am grateful no LMPD officers were harmed in this encounter and thankful no members of the public were injured during this incident. I am also thankful footage of this incident was captured on a body worn camera. We will update the public on this incident as information becomes available.”

The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is leading the investigation.
